Cultivar: Gaidourelia (origin - Greece)

Gaidourelia apparently means “donkey olive” in Greek; what exactly is meant by this has me scratching my head.  The olives are used for Spanish style green olives in brine, and for Sicilian style green olives.  They are said to be unsuitable for natural black olives in brine: off flavors can develop due to low fermentable sugars (Zapateria defect).  It is also said to have a buttery flavor when processed (do donkeys crave buttery flavors?).  Freestone.

This example is not doing particularly good, nor particularly bad.

Gaidourelia bits the dust (died).  Two extreme winters in a row was just too much.  Too bad, I did learn why it is called "donkey olive" in Greek: the allusion is to olives as big as a donkey's balls.
