Cultivar: Hojiblanca (origin - Spain)

Hojiblanca is the third most common olive tree in Spain, and indeed in the world, with about 550,000 acres planted.  It is said to not be very common outside of Spain due to it’s low yield of oil, but yet University of California data says it has superior productivity, superior oil yield, high quality (“flavor”), and superior cold hardiness (see “Conclusions”: Olive Varieties for Oil Production).  That seems to say we in Oregon should give it serious consideration!

Hojiblanca olive oil is said to have a tremendous range of flavors, but the most characteristic one is said to be sweetness when first tasted, followed by a slightly bitter almond aftertaste.

It is viewed as a promising variety in Australia for table olive production, with fine skin and a firm flesh, for California style black ripe olives.  It is reputed to be prone to gaseous spoilage when using the Greek style black ripe method; and when picked at the turning color stage to be prone to shriveling during storage.  Considered self pollinating; clingstone.

We had ten Hojiblanca olive trees in our plantings.  The last two winters have not been kind to the Hojis, leaving them looking like this:

Five are now dead, three are left in the field and two are back in pots to gain some strength before they are field planted again.
