Cultivar: Koroneiki (origin - Greece)

Koroneiki is the most common oil variety in Greece.  In the U. S. a special clone, Koroneiki i-38, is being touted for use in super high density groves, as Koroneiki is another natural low vigor olive cultivar.  However, it is believed that Koroneiki is not particularly cold tolerant, and so is not being used by those in Oregon putting in super high density groves, to any great extent (ah, it shouldn't be used to any great extent.  Several large growers are taking a "shotgun approach", and are planting equal amounts of the three low vigor super high density clones.  I talked to one this spring: he is still holding out hope for Koroneiki).

However, here is a picture of a Koroneiki in a pot, that came through the winter of 2008-2009 in pretty good shape.  Perhaps the “California wisdom” is not entirely applicable to Oregon?

On the other hand, both my field planted Koroneiki trees have been reduced to twigs (and no leaves); while the one in a pot did not fare so well this winter either.
