Cultivar: Lechin de Sevilla (origin - Spain)

Lechin de Sevilla is used for oil and for black pickled olives.  It is reputed to be cold hardy; but has fallen out of favor commercially due to only medium oil content and that it is hard to pick by machine: the ratio between its removal force and size is high.  It is also supposed to be one of the most resistant cultivars to the olive fly.  While the olive fly is not yet present in Oregon (to my knowledge!); it is the way of the modern world that this will probably change in the not too long term future…

However, for us, for our extreme 2008-2009 winter, Lechin de Sevilla did not do particularly well.  As you can see from the photo, all five of these trees were totally defoliated.  However, the good news is that all five are still alive, and are re-sprouting from the base!

Four have totally recovered and are growing strongly.  The fifth died.  At this point, we are probably not going to get more Lechin de Sevilla, until these have gone through another couple of winters here...

10/03/09:

Lechin de Sevilla were strongly affected by the 10 F winter; most of the leaves you see on the center two trees are actually this spring's growth.  Still seems to be amongst the most cold sensitive of the Spanish cultivars...

06/05/10:

Good re-growth in a comparatively cool summer - maybe a good sign?  Maybe if we can get them sized up they will do better in the ground during the winter.  If this winter is decent, these will go in the ground next spring.
