Cultivar: Lucca (origin - United States)

There is a town of Lucca in Tuscany, and a cultivar called Lucca is grown in the region; but apparently this Lucca is not that Lucca.  This Lucca was developed by Professor Hartman at U. C. Davis, and is probably very similar to Frantoio, and is also used to make olive oil.

I talked to the nursery manager at McEvoy Ranch (whilst buying some of their fine organic trees): she stopped propagating Lucca because it was so similar to Frantoio that it brought nothing to the party.

Well, perhaps.  On the other hand, based on small numbers, Lucca trees may have better winter cold tolerance here in Oregon (for most of the time I was talking to her, she was using cold tolerance to refer to the cold tolerance of the olive fruit; I was using it to refer to the cold tolerance of the trees!  Just goes to show you the difference in the problems we face!).

A row of five Lucca.

The same five Lucca trees, looking up the hill.  In comparison, the row of trees immediately behind the Lucca are Kalamata, and the row behind that are Amphissis.  All are looking really nice!
