Cultivar: Ouslati (origin - Tunisia)
Ouslati appears to be Manzanillo based on DNA tests done in 2008 on the trees at the U. S. National Clonal Germplasm Repository. So, at this point, no more need be said about Ouslati, as it would appear that we don’t really have Ouslati; as the NCGR was the source of our cuttings.
(N.B. The situation is not clear from this distance: was the wood collected and propagated at the NCGR mislabeled, or is there not really a distinct cultivar of olive named Ouslati?)
On the other hand, “Ouslati” certainly seems to have come through the December 2008 storms in much better shape than “Manzanillo”…

Of all the olive trees in two gallon pots, Oeslati made the most new growth this summer (in fact, I think the only field grown trees we have that did better are Leccino). The tree in the center has grown new shoots of 31 and 32 inches!

And they came through the winter in excellent shape. As they have put on more new growth sooner than any other olive tree I have (up to 4" already, when some other haven't even started), they looked poised to again be one of the fastest growers in the 2010 growing season.
