Cultivar: Verdale (origin - France)

Information from the ARS-GRIN database:

“Information on this variety from Bulletin 720, Olive Varieties in California, by Hartman and Papaioannou, California Agricultural Experiment Station, University of California, Berkeley, February 1951: Imported from Japan in 1950. Verdale, originally a French variety. In that country it is commonly grown as one of the leading table olive varieties. It produces large fruit but is reported to be somewhat susceptible to cold injury.”

Well, the times they do change: this variety showed almost no damage from our storms in December, 2008.  Not only that, but these four cuttings from the NCGR started just a year ago are all blooming profusely.  Verdale takes the cake for being precocious, of all the cultivars I have seen so far!

The three survivors grew moderately well this summer.  I am really looking forward to see how well they bloom this coming spring!

And they did well coming through the winter.  Although you can't see them yet, they look to be covered with blossoms again this spring… stay tuned!

05/28/10:

And indeed they are covered with blooms!  They are only the second cultivar to open blossoms; fortunately almost all others are only a week or so behind.  This year, being they are all of two years old, I'll probably let a few fruit hang on till harvest time.  Right now, except for the fact that the season is so late, looks to be an excellent bloom year for most of our cultivars.
